What is Fair Trade and Why it Matters

Fair trade is a system of trade that aims to promote fairness and social justice by ensuring that workers in developing countries receive fair wages and good working conditions. It is based on the principle of paying a fair price for products and services, which enables producers to cover their production costs and invest in their communities. One of the reasons why fair trade is important is that it helps to alleviate poverty and improve the lives of marginalized workers in developing countries. By guaranteeing fair wages, it provides workers with the means to support their families, send their children to school, and access healthcare. Fair trade also encourages the development of sustainable communities by promoting environmentally friendly practices and providing access to education and training. Two companies that are leading the way in the fair trade movement are Noonday Collection and Sseko Designs who have joined forces to expand their reach. Noonday Collection is a fair trade fashion company that partners with artisans from around the world to create beautiful and unique jewelry, accessories, and clothing. The company works with more than 4,500 artisans in 13 countries, including Guatemala, Uganda, and Vietnam, and provides them with a fair wage and safe working conditions.

Sseko Designs is another fair trade company that specializes in handcrafted sandals, clothing and accessories - especially leather bags. The company was founded in Uganda in 2009 and has since expanded to other countries, including Ethiopia and Kenya. Sseko Designs provides fair wages and opportunities for women who would otherwise have limited access to education and employment. Both Noonday Collection and Sseko Designs demonstrate the power of fair trade to make a positive impact on the lives of artisans and their communities. By supporting fair trade companies, consumers can play a vital role in creating a more just and equitable global economy. I have had the opportunity to work with both of these companies, Noonday Collection for 7 years, and I have seen the impact first hand. Fair trade is an important system of trade that promotes fairness and social justice by providing workers in developing countries with fair wages, good working conditions, and opportunities for sustainable development. Companies like Noonday Collection and Sseko Designs are leading the way in the fair trade movement, showing that it is possible to create beautiful, high-quality products while still prioritizing social responsibility and ethical business practices. As consumers, we have the power to support fair trade and make a positive difference in the world. You can find Fair Trade products in every grocery store - keep a look out in the coffee, tea and chocolate aisles. This is an easy place to start, but you can also shop this link and support other fair trade companies. https://michellemussari.noondaycollection.com/shop/
